Experimental Mathematics – A Course-Based Research Experience in Machine Learning

Efforts to expand the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) work- force have been topics of United States policy action for more than 50 years (Hira 2010). Unfortunately, among U.S. undergraduate curricula, STEM has one highest attrition rates (Tinto 1993) with less half students in that enroll an program ultimately receiving a degree field (Hayes 2009). Naturally, high rate is topic persisting concern. Many programs designed implemented model best practices retaining disciplines. One retention strategy engage undergraduates research experiences, number provide such experiences. The Towson University Research Enhancement Program (TU REP) program. This cohort-based supports faculty development course-based experiences (CUREs). In this note we describe CURE machine learning offered by Department Mathematics whose was supported TU REP. We categorize course along spectrum traditional, inquiry, internship each five dimensions characteristic CURE.
